For decades, the artistic and educational concept of Elementary Dance has been well-established. It is an autonomous branch of the Free Dance of the twenties, developed by the German dancer, choreographer and educationalist Maja Lex (1906 – 86).
Characteristic of a pedagogic as well as an artistic education is, in the past and likewise today, the creative examination of dance movement, music and rhythm. Alternative methods of body exercise are in the foreground, which – based on ‘Structured Improvisation’ – fluidly develop into a creative urge. They are the source of inspiration and connect, in their entirety, training methods, body- and sense schooling as well as the choreographic work. A formative influence of any technique is out of the question.
Because of that, Elementary Dance is not only a sound theoretical construct but it lives from its manyfold application possibilities, traditionally at college, at school and at leisure institutions with amateurs of all age levels, but also with semi-professionals or professionals.
The openness of the teaching process, the dialogue between teacher and student, makes it possible for all persons involved to greatly benefit as to positive momentum, experience and professional know-how.
As regards central content, these are: technique, composition, rhythmical and musical rudiments and theory. The style of instruction follows a firm concept and offers at the same time freedom for individuality, exchange and constructive criticism.
Students who have completed the course Elementary Dance at DSHS Köln have achieved distinguished positions as dancers, teachers and/or choreographers or they are very successful in the sphere of performance as well as related subject, such as the dance theatre and the musical theatre.
